THE PEN THAT WILL NOT BOW (2026)

A Yoreflix original only available on Yoreflix starting October 23, 2026

Directed by Nicole Sarah Fry

Screenplay by Florian Hencher

THE PEN THAT WILL NOT BOW is a historical drama exploring the early life of Voltaire (Florian Hencher), born François-Marie Arouet, before he became one of Europe's most influential writers and philosophers. In early eighteenth-century Paris, the ambitious and sharp-witted young Voltaire is determined to use theatre, satire and poetry to rise beyond the constraints of his birth. But his irreverent talent brings him into conflict with France's powerful elite, where one barbed line can invite censorship, imprisonment or exile. At the centre of his formative years is his relationship with Adrienne Lecouvreur (Georgia Hirst), the celebrated actress of the Comédie-Française. Drawn together by their shared love of performance, language and artistic freedom, Adrienne becomes both Voltaire's muse and his moral equal. Their bond deepens as Voltaire's writing begins to challenge the hypocrisy and injustice of the world around them - while Adrienne confronts the brutal prejudices facing women on the eighteenth-century stage.
